DC Fitness Expert gives the low down on Supplements
We get a ton of questions regarding supplements. Which ones should I take? Which ones are good for me? What does this one do? Who makes this stuff? Who says what should be in which supplement?
If you’ve ever asked any of these questions check out the video below.
As a DC personal trainer we advise our clients to drink plenty of water, take fish oil daily as well as vitamin D. These are the basics which I also take every day.

Lazy Recipes by Georgetown Personal Trainer
We all know eating right is important and that 6-pack abs start in the kitchen but if you are like many of TBYW’s clients then you are pressed for time or eat out a ton. Have no fear because you can still make great progress and get great results without cooking and still eating out.
Try my favorite snack. Yogurt and cucumbers. Yep that’s it. Chop up the cucs and pour your yogurt on top! You can also add dill, mint, or walnuts.

super easy and fast to fix!
Another tasty snack is yogurt and orange peel. Yes, kinda strange but this DC personal trainer loves it. Click on the link for the recipe!

perfect for summer!
And if you’d like something a bit more substantial but still quick and easy how about hot dogs and sour kraut?! Sour kraut is fermented and adds a ton of healthy bacteria in your diet. Other options for healthy bacteria include yogurt and kombucha.

Georgetown Personal Trainer on Scientific American missing the facts on Obesity
I recently wrote a letter to the editor of Scientific American, but I don’t think they liked it. I presented them with a letter to the editor on a cover piece on obesity, but it doesn’t look like they want to publish it. So, I’m going to myself.

To the editors of Scientific American:
David H. Friedman wrote an article titled; “How to Fix the Obesity Crisis.” It was published on the February 2011 Scientific American cover and states: “”What science says about losing weight and keeping it off.” After reading through all the information Friedman presents it’s nothing more than wishful thoughts. Another issue is that most of the other information has been refuted by serious scientific investigations and none of them were cited in the material.
As an expert on weight loss in DC, who actually works with real people, here are four major issues I found:
1. Friedman’s claims stating; “[f]or millennia, not getting enough food was a widespread problem [and those humans] evolved [...] in an environment where famine was a constant threat.” These beliefs revolve around our abundance of food playing a key role in the obesity epidemic.
This is a common belief that doesn’t come with any type of substantial evidence.
Our agricultural society has only been around for about 10,000 years while humans have been in existence for millions of years. This means the majority of our time on earth we’ve been hunter-gatherers. When you look at the findings of anthropologists who study hunter-gatherers; the majority of the people who survived into the 20th century only gathered food for a few hours per day. Keep in mind; this was after they were driven from the best locations to hunt and gather food. While they were pushed out of prosperous locations they were still able to produce as much food as they wanted throughout each day.
There is no evidence that any of these individuals suffered from starvation, even though it’s in standard nutritional mythology. If they wanted to eat more food they could have spent 10 more hours a week gathering and hunting for it. So it’s important to understand that the (1-8) widespread human famine is a newer issue. In fact, all you have to do is date back to when agricultural societies relied heavily on growing grain crops.
2. The “thrifty gene” is another issue. Nutritionists and public health researchers invoked this because of the outgrowth in the previous problem. They say our bodies are genetically programmed to store fat easier through the “thrifty gene.”

Geneticist James V. Neel studied this for more than 20 years and hypothesized the thrifty gene himself. His work stated he wasn’t able to find evidence that supported the “thrifty gene hypothesis.” Neel’s actual belief was the obesity epidemic was due to highly refined carbohydrates (9-12).
3. Friedman also stated; “[t]he basic formula for weight loss is simple and widely known: consume fewer calories than you expend.”
However, later on he goes on to admit; “as many as two thirds of dieters end up two years later weighing more.” Oddly enough this is despite all their strenuous efforts to control caloric intake. One-third of the people who go through this end up back at their previous weight according to the details in the APA study Friedman’s article presented.
So when you have a weight loss program that makes us fatter it’s not really a plausible program. The truth is; eating less and exercising more doesn’t work at all. A bigger issue is that nutritionists and experts will tell us that aerobic exercise and low-fat diets with high-carbohydrates are good for us. I find this extremely hard to believe considering the decades of utter failure. The blame is shifted to our lack of will power, but good scientists won’t blame their subjects for experimental protocol.
I went through Friedman’s entire article and there were 4 pages of content surrounding behavioral therapy. The overall goal was to force people into staying hungry when will power wasn’t working. He should have said that hunger isn’t a lifestyle. What it comes down to is our obesity research is the real problem.
While this Susan Sontag’s quote was geared towards HIV/AIDS, it actually makes sense with the obesity crisis today; “Theories that diseases are caused by mental states and can be cured by will power are always an index of how much is not understood about the physical terrain of a disease.”
4. Finally, there is an underlying biological premise in Friedman’s article. It mirrors the mainstream approach to human obesity and how human fat cells are unique in the animal kingdom. When you research this they happen to be the only cells ever found that are regulated by thought, character, and deed, as opposed to hormones. These cells “soak-up” calories that swim by in the bloodstream. Unfortunately this thought process is extremely unscientific. So Friedman is saying that the human vertical growth is regulated by growth hormone, but horizontal growth is a character defect? How many people can honestly say they are short because they don’t have enough will power to be taller?
I find that the information and concept behind Friedman’s article a weak approach to want readers who normally enjoy Scientific American. This is definitely not the type of “science” their readers are used to.
